The William Peace University Men’s Lacrosse team secured their first win of the season in an impressive fashion, triumphing over Averett University. The victory was a culmination of months of hard work, preparation, and team chemistry that was evident in every play. As the players took the field for their season opener, their minds were focused, their energy high, and their determination unshaken.
The offseason training played a crucial role in setting the stage for this victory. Sophomore Jamar Bell reflected on how the team had been eager to put in the work during the offseason. “Practice with a new coach is kind of tough at first, but you trust that he wants to lead you in the right direction,” he said. Bell added that the hunger to face an opponent other than themselves after months of practice added an extra layer of excitement to the game.
Freshman Jeffery Hutcherson also spoke to the benefits of offseason preparation, particularly in improving individual skills. “My offseason training has prepared me by helping me recognize the right defense package and how to approach my opponent to prevent them from scoring,” he explained. This mental preparedness helped Hutcherson stay calm and focused during critical moments of the game.
When it came to facing Averett, the team knew they had to be ready for a challenge. Bell noted that the key to winning was neutralizing Averett’s top player, a forward known for his explosive playmaking. “We expect to stop number 34 from having a field day, and we plan to stop their man-up plays and capitalize off of it,” Bell said. The team’s defensive efforts were crucial to the victory, as they kept Averett’s offensive players under control, never letting them find a rhythm.
Junior William English, an experienced player, emphasized the importance of team chemistry and offensive control. “Offseason training allowed us to focus on our individual skills, so when the season came around, we could focus on playing as a team,” English said. His role as an offensive leader was pivotal in slowing down the tempo and keeping the game under control, allowing the defense to catch a break when needed. “I expect to win, but I’m more focused on staying out of the penalty box and running the offense efficiently,” English added.
The team’s energy heading into the first game was undeniable. Bell described the morale as being “very high emotionally and mentally,” noting that the players were ready to face the challenges that lay ahead. Hutcherson also spoke about the team’s confidence, stating that with their coach, Troy Humphery, leading them, they were always mentally prepared to take on any challenge. The support from one another, combined with their individual preparations, gave the team the confidence they needed to perform at their best.
As for personal goals, players had their eyes set on both individual and collective achievements. Bell aimed to score a series of goals to stun Averett and unsettle their confidence, while Hutcherson’s goal was to come out strong and prove that William Peace University was a team to be reckoned with. “We have a lot to prove,” Hutcherson said, “and today’s win shows that we can fight for what we want and stand by each other.”
The team’s strong focus on improvement was clear as they entered the game. English mentioned his desire to improve his dodging and decision-making on passes, while Bell expressed his focus on improving his endurance. For all the players, today’s victory wasn’t just about winning—it was about setting a tone for the rest of the season and showing that they were ready for whatever challenges awaited them.
As the season progresses, the first win of the year will surely be remembered as a defining moment for the William Peace University Men’s Lacrosse team. With their strong preparation, high morale, and focus on teamwork, the team is poised to build on this momentum and aim for even greater success.
