The William Peace Women’s Basketball team wrapped up a season of growth, perseverance, and team-building. Despite the challenges they faced, the team used every obstacle as an opportunity to strengthen their foundation, develop leadership, and create a unified vision for the future.
A Season of Growth
When reflecting on the season, players consistently emphasized their development both individually and as a team. Senior Ja’naisja Baker described the team’s evolution, stating, “Despite facing rough patches and losing a lot, we kept pushing forward and worked even harder. The tough moments only made us stronger and more determined.” Junior Shania Taylor echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that no matter what obstacles arose, the team refused to back down.
For sophomore Alayna Randolph, the season was defined by motivation. “Even though we may not have had the best record, we continued to stay motivated and fight,” she shared. Junior Cashea Mortan described the season as eye-opening. “It showed us that we needed to play together to make an impact!” This realization became a driving force behind their progress and laid the groundwork for the team’s future success.
Building Chemistry and Teamwork
One of the most significant developments of the season was the team’s ability to grow together. Mortan highlighted the transformation, stating, “In the first game, everyone was playing for themselves and their stats. By the last game, we shared the ball and played patiently. The more people started to sit down and grow up, the more we became sisters!”
This bond was evident in key matchups throughout the season. Baker recalled a hard-fought battle against Greensboro College, where the team showcased resilience despite the loss. Randolph pointed to the home game against Pfeiffer University as a personal milestone, while Mortan found the final game against Methodist to be the most defining. “I felt as if everyone played together, and it was a good environment to be in. It was an enlightening moment, and I felt like we were all close!”
Overcoming Adversity Together
The team faced multiple challenges, including injuries and tough losses, but each setback became a stepping stone for growth. “The biggest challenge was dealing with the ups and downs, especially after tough losses,” Baker admitted. “We had to stay focused and keep believing in each other.”
Mortan pointed out the impact of losing a key player to injury. “The biggest challenge we faced was when Jess got injured. We lost a post, and it was hard because she made an impact on the team both on the court and personality-wise. We moved past it by others stepping into that role.”
Rather than letting these challenges define them, the team embraced the opportunity to adapt and grow, setting a foundation for a stronger future.
Leadership and Development
Throughout the season, players stepped up to lead and set an example for their teammates. Baker emerged as a vocal leader, ensuring that the team stayed united. Randolph praised freshman Zi for stepping into a significant role and making an all-around impact. Taylor highlighted Baker’s leadership and ability to uplift the team in critical moments.
Mortan recognized the growth of multiple teammates, stating, “Jay stepped up and became a great leader. Also, I feel as if Shania stepped up in the role as a post and really showed that she can be out there with the big dogs!”
With leadership continuing to develop, the team’s foundation is stronger than ever heading into next season.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening the Foundation
With a young and determined core returning, the team is focused on building on their progress. “Our biggest goal is to take what we’ve learned and continue improving,” Baker shared. Randolph emphasized the importance of unity and mutual support, while Taylor focused on refining their game and competing at a higher level. “We’re coming back stronger, more focused, and ready to compete,” she said.
Mortan expressed a similar goal: “The team’s biggest goal is to show our capabilities because we are counted out a lot and have fun together while putting BTA!”
Gratitude for Supporters
The team extends its heartfelt appreciation to the fans and supporters who stood by them throughout the season. “Your belief in us kept us going,” Baker expressed. Randolph added, “We appreciate each and every one of our supporters—we couldn’t thank y’all enough.”
As the William Peace Women’s Basketball team moves forward, they do so with a solid foundation, a commitment to growth, and a determination to make an even greater impact next season.
